Dear Suburban Artist Network!

It's been a while.  Geoff and I have been working hard with an incredible group of people, from the Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative, friends and neighbours, local businesses, and the City of Calgary Parks to create the Acadia Community Garden.  We are starting our build June 1st. We are interested in connecting with artists for art in the garden in the coming years.  Please let me know if you are interested in learning more.  We are looking for people with a connection to Acadia - live/work/play/worship/school/alumi/ - be prepared to share your Acadia connection with us :)

I hope you can make it out to one of the Arts Plan open houses.  The link for the dates is below.

A Conference Exploring How
Puppets Innovatively Address
the Tough Issues
Facing Us
 in Today's World...

...for educators, helping professionals, artists, activists, idea generators and students

INSPIRE, INFORM AND GALVINIZE

Puppets are for everyone. They can make you laugh. They can make you cry. They can open our eyes to the world in new ways. They bring joy, creative outlet and help us tackle emotional and social issues. Puppets can create meaningful bonds within families and groups of people through the breadth of expression they provide and through the collaboration required to construct them. They also play a broad role in contemporary society, providing a creative platform to express controversial and significant social issues.
Keynote speaker Martin P. Robinson of Sesame International, hands-on workshops, peer mentoring, panel discussions and more explore the power of puppetry beyond performance.

CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

WP Puppet Theatre Society has been Animating the Spirit since 1991. Our biennial puppet conferences, the first of which was in 2001, have included the following themes: "Puppets as a Therapeutic Medium", "Embracing Multiculturalism", "Puppets Promote Literacy" and "Puppets as Agents of Social Change". Puppet Power conferences have attracted participants from all areas of the helping professions, as well as educators, artists, activists and students.

Suburban Calgary Artist Network Update

The Suburban Calgary Artist Network - we are back on track. Geoff and I took an unexpected hiatus as Geoff was taking a four month course "Chemistry for Conservators" by correspondence with the International Academics Project.  If you are interested in learning more about this fascinating subject, the link is:

http://www.academicprojects.co.uk/course-details.php?courseID=733

With the course completed, its time to enjoy the wonders of our Suburban Calgary Art scene!

Next time you are at the Willow Park Hair Salon in the SE Community of Willow Park  - check out the art on the walls. Not only are the staff amazing hair and beauty artists, but two of the staff also are painters.   http://willowparksalonandspa.com/hair-services/

If you have an event or know a great place to perform, display, create art in the suburbs, please send me an email at corinne.sandhurst@gmail.com.  I will be delighted to share it here.

Thank you,

Acadia Community Garden

Please come join us at the Acadia Recreation Complex lobby on Thursday, January 17th from 7:00-8:30 drop in to celebrate our first year of work on creating a community garden in Acadia.

The Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative is generously providing coffee/tea/hot chocolate and cookies.

We look forward to sharing our progress to date and our plans for the next year.

The proposed build date is spring 2014.

The Acadia Community Garden is a grateful recipient of one of the Calgary 2012 Grassroots Initiative grants.

We encourage Acadia community artists of all ages (live/work/play/attend school) in Acadia to come on out and find out more about the garden.  We propose to incorporate functional art (community board, benches, entrance feature)  in the garden and welcome artists in the development phases to become familiar with this project.  Art proposal phase is planned for Fall 2014.

Thank you,

Calgary 2012 Sweet City Woman LipDub tomorrow at 9 am

I can't wait to see the Calgary 2012 Sweet City Woman LipDub! It comes out tomorrow at 9:00 am at this Youtube LInk.

Here is the link - try it 9 am tomorrow! Help it go viral!!!

http://www.youtube.com/user/Calgary2012cc?feature=mhee

The Sandhurst family was in section #4 under the fabulous leadership of Alice Nelson. You should see us quickly after

the crowd turns right on to McLeod Trail near the beginning of the song at "Bon C'est Bon" lyrics as the camera turns to go north on the sidewalk on McLeod Trail.

Geoff crosses riding his unicycle in front of the camera in the distance.

If you see the roller derby gals swinging each other around, look to the right and we should be beside them. The camera zoomed by us really fast though on a golf cart - so the camera might have missed us.

Kierra is walking on blue globe, with boring me in red standing beside her waving.

Caelin is riding on three wheeled unicycle just behind or beside us us, but he thinks he might be hidden behind a tree.

It was an amazing day, and it was so exciting to be part of it. It took 4 takes and they picked number 3 as the best one. Its one continuous shot. What a sweet city of citizens celebrating to Sweet City Woman by the Stampeders, Calgary's very first international hit!
It was great fun to do this with Alice Nelson and crew and all the section four volunteers -  Literacy Alberta, The Roller Derby Girls, Cookie Monster and the Cookie, Cary and Jay from Calgary Circus and the fabulous individuals of section 4 - you rock!  So much fun!

Congratulations to Calgary 2012 and their amazing LipDub Team!
