Arts in the South

South Calgary Artist Network is open to everyone!

I live in the south and I am curious about arts and culture happening in the south end of the city.  If you know of events/happenings/news about arts and culture, please let me know.

I am also the Acadia Jane's Walk Leader and next May's walk is Arts, Culture and Good Eats - Acadia Style.  I am looking for Acadia info to add to my walk and talk!

Trying to get the word?....

If you are an artist or involved in a arts/culture/heritage project - you are welcome send me the details and I will tweet or retweet for you.  I am one of the Cultural Ambassadors for Calgary 2012

If you are tweeting consider adding #sceneyyc as your hashtag.

Add your event to http://www.visitcalgary.com/ to have it added to the sceneyyc mobile app created by Calgary 2012.

Here is a bit of what I know:

Artisan Gardens at the Historic Bow Valley Ranche - Fish Creek Provincial Park http://www.bowvalleyranche.com/artisan-corner.html

Protospace:  http://www.protospace.ca/

Beakerhead  http://www.beakerhead.org/about/  - I am not sure if its any venues for the 5 day festival are in the south, but this sounds too amazing not to mention!

Fish Creek Library has had open mikes before - check with the library for the next one scheduled. Its also the home for South Calgary Artist Network!

Please add your comments here about arts in South Calgary

Thank you!

Ideas on taking painting lessons

We were asked about ideas on where to take painting lessons.  Because it's not our area of expertise, we are writing down what we know and welcoming anyone to add comments with ideas of where to take lessons in Calgary.  Of course, if you know of a great place to travel to and take lessons, we would love to hear about that too.

I do receive Robert Genn's twice weekly letter, and although we have never met, and I am not a painter, I enjoy the wisdom in these emails and looking at all the links for workshops etc. offered by Robert Genn and others on the painters keys website. The link is below.

My son enjoyed classes at Swinton's in the past. Swinton's has wonderful instructors for all ages and a there are workshops, classes and the Friday night demos with a glass of wine.  http://www.swintonsart.com/

The Calgary School of Art is within Cactus Art supplies. We don't know anyone that has attended, but we enjoy the artwork on display when we stop in.

The City of Calgary has many art programs  http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Recreation/Pages/Arts-and-culture/Home.aspx?redirect=/arts

Indefinate Arts http://www.indefinitearts.com/programs.php is a remarkable art centre in the community of Fairview for adults with developmental disabilities. There are also volunteering opportunities.

Both of our children take lessons with Jill Hobson. Excellent instruction and incredibly gifted teacher. http://www.jillhobson.ca/

Alberta College of Art / U of C /Mount Royal might have things of interest as well in continuing ed or taking credit courses.

My lunch is over, and time to go....so here is the start of a list - please do add on!
